Students as Peace Builders: Shaping a Harmonious Future
Students play a vital role in promoting peace within schools, communities, and society at large. As young leaders and future change makers, they bring energy, creativity, and a strong sense of responsibility to the task of building a more peaceful world. Through their daily interactions and choices, students can influence attitudes, reduce conflict, and foster understanding among diverse groups.
One of the most important ways students contribute to peace is by promoting tolerance, respect, and unity among their peers. By choosing dialogue over confrontation and understanding over judgment, young people help create safer and more inclusive school environments. They also stand against violence, discrimination, and hate, becoming powerful voices for fairness and human dignity. In doing so, students act as peace ambassadors not only in their schools but also in their wider communities.
Recognizing this powerful role of youth, Admas Holistic Youth Development Association, through its project “Peace Builders: Strengthening Youth and Schools for Lasting Peace and Social Cohesion in the Amhara Region,” funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), organized a conflict prevention and peacebuilding training for students of Gion Secondary School in Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara Regional Government.
The training brought together 30 students, equally represented by 15 female and 15 male participants, ensuring inclusiveness and balanced participation. This gender-balanced approach encouraged diverse perspectives and strengthened collaboration throughout the sessions.
Students actively engaged in all activities. They openly shared ideas, participated in discussions, and worked effectively in mixed-gender groups. The interactive training methods helped them better understand peacebuilding concepts and apply them to real-life situations, making the learning experience both practical and meaningful.
Young people represent the future leadership of society. When peace values are taught and practiced early, they create a lasting social impact. Empowered and informed students are better equipped to prevent conflict, promote dialogue, and strengthen social cohesion within their communities. When youth are actively involved, peacebuilding becomes not only effective but also sustainable and inclusive.
Through initiatives like this, schools become more than just places of learning—they become foundations for a peaceful and united society.
