Empowering Teachers to Build Peaceful Schools
Teachers play a central role in shaping the values, attitudes, and behavior of students. Beyond delivering academic lessons, they influence how young people think, communicate, and resolve conflict. When teachers are equipped with peacebuilding skills, they can create safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environments that nurture both academic success and social harmony.
Recognizing this important role, Admas Holistic Youth Development Association, through its project “Peace Builders: Strengthening Youth and Schools for Lasting Peace and Social Cohesion in the Amhara Region,” funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), organized a conflict prevention and peacebuilding training for teachers.
The training brought together dedicated educators from different backgrounds who share a common goal: creating peaceful and supportive school communities. Teachers were introduced to key concepts of conflict prevention, dialogue, tolerance, and social cohesion. Through interactive discussions and practical exercises, they explored how conflicts arise in schools and how they can be managed in constructive and non-violent ways.
Participants actively engaged in the sessions, sharing real classroom experiences and learning from one another. The training emphasized the importance of listening, empathy, and inclusive communication—skills that are essential for handling disagreements among students and between school stakeholders. Teachers also learned how to identify early signs of conflict and intervene before problems escalate.
By empowering teachers with peacebuilding skills, the project strengthens the foundation for long-term social harmony. When teachers model respect, fairness, and peaceful problem-solving, students are more likely to adopt these values in their own lives. This creates a ripple effect that extends beyond the classroom into families and the wider community.
Through this initiative, schools are being transformed into spaces not only of learning but also of peace, understanding, and cooperation—laying the groundwork for a more stable and united society.
