Youth as Peace Ambassadors: Reflections from Our Conflict Prevention Training in Bahir Dar
Explore how young leaders are driving positive change in their communities through civic participation, advocacy campaigns, and grassroots initiatives.
Young people aren't just the leaders of tomorrow—they're the changemakers of today. Through AHYDA's civic engagement programs, youth across Ethiopia are taking active roles in shaping their communities and advocating for positive change.
Why Civic Engagement Matters
When young people are engaged in civic life, entire communities benefit. Youth bring fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and boundless energy to addressing local challenges. Civic engagement also builds critical skills in leadership, advocacy, and democratic participation.
Our Civic Engagement Programs

We provide comprehensive leadership development that covers:
- Community organizing and mobilization
- Advocacy and campaign planning

Community Action Projects
Youth participants identify local issues and design projects to address them. Recent projects include:
- Environmental cleanup campaigns
- Youth-led health awareness initiatives

Youth Councils and Forums
We support the formation of youth councils that serve as platforms for young people to voice concerns, propose solutions, and engage with local government and community leaders.
Spotlight: The Clean Water Campaign
When youth participants in our program identified water access as a critical issue in their neighborhood, they didn't just complain—they took action. They conducted community surveys, documented the problem, and presented findings to local officials.
Their advocacy led to the installation of three new water points serving over 500 families. More importantly, it demonstrated the power of youth voice and collective action.
Building Democratic Culture
Our civic engagement work goes beyond individual projects. We're helping to build a culture of democratic participation where young people understand their rights, responsibilities, and power to effect change.
Through workshops on governance, human rights, and civic responsibility, we're nurturing a generation of informed, engaged citizens who will strengthen Ethiopia's democratic institutions.
